Why Pet Valu’s New Balzac Facility Is a Win for Calgary’s Economy

Pet Valu’s new distribution centre in Balzac is a strong win for Calgary’s economy. The facility brings 100 full-time and part-time skilled jobs to the region and supports long-term growth across Western Canada.

The new building is about 295,000 square feet and sits in the Balzac Business Park, just north of the city. It replaces Pet Valu’s older warehouse nearby and becomes a key hub serving stores in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. This move helps Pet Valu operate more efficiently while keeping jobs and investment close to Calgary.

This project is also the final step in Pet Valu’s four-year supply chain upgrade. With major distribution centres now operating in Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta, the company has built one of the most advanced logistics networks in the Canadian pet retail industry. Better systems mean faster deliveries, fewer errors, and stronger support for local stores.

For Calgary, the benefits go beyond job creation. Large industrial projects like this help strengthen the region’s position as a logistics and distribution hub. Balzac continues to attract national companies because of its access to highways, workforce availability, and proximity to Calgary’s urban core.

The building is LEED Gold Certified, showing a focus on energy efficiency and better working conditions for employees. This matters as companies look to attract skilled workers while lowering long-term operating costs.

Pet Valu is a Canadian company with more than 800 locations across the country and over 45 years in business. Alongside its commercial growth, the company is also known for giving back through fundraising for animal shelters and adoption programs.

Overall, Pet Valu’s new Balzac facility shows how smart industrial investment can create jobs, support long-term growth, and add real value to Calgary’s economy.
